Introduction

Vision 2030 is a blueprint for a successful, connected and well-functioning mental health and suicide prevention system meeting the needs of all Australians. It was developed by the National Mental Health Commission (NMHC) in 2019, and is based on the principles of person-centred care, early intervention, and recovery.

The recent changes within Australia, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic downturn, and the bushfires, have had a significant impact on mental health. These changes have led to an increase in the number of people experiencing mental health problems, and have also made it more difficult for people to access mental health services.

In this essay, I will discuss how the recent changes within Australia will influence the implementation of Vision 2030 within the Australian mental health system. I will argue that the changes will make it more difficult to implement Vision 2030, but that there are a number of things that can be done to overcome these challenges.

Body

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on mental health. A study by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that the number of people reporting mental health problems increased by 16% in the first year of the pandemic (AIHW, 2021). The pandemic has also made it more difficult for people to access mental health services. Many services were closed during the pandemic, and even those that remained open were often operating at reduced capacity.

The economic downturn has also had a negative impact on mental health. A study by the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that the number of people reporting mental health problems increased by 12% in the first year of the economic downturn (ABS, 2020). The economic downturn has made it more difficult for people to find work, and has also led to an increase in financial stress.

The bushfires have also had a significant impact on mental health. A study by the University of Melbourne found that the bushfires led to an increase in the number of people reporting mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Hodges et al., 2020). The bushfires have also led to an increase in social isolation and loneliness, which are both risk factors for mental health problems.

The recent changes within Australia have made it more difficult to implement Vision 2030. The increase in the number of people experiencing mental health problems has put a strain on mental health services. The closure of services during the pandemic has also made it more difficult for people to access the care they need. The economic downturn has also made it more difficult for people to afford mental health care.

Despite these challenges, there are a number of things that can be done to overcome them. First, it is important to increase funding for mental health services. This will allow services to expand their capacity and provide care to more people. Second, it is important to make mental health care more affordable. This can be done by providing subsidies for mental health care, or by making mental health care available through Medicare. Third, it is important to raise awareness of mental health problems. This will help to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, and encourage people to seek help when they need it.

Conclusion

The recent changes within Australia have made it more difficult to implement Vision 2030. However, there are a number of things that can be done to overcome these challenges. By increasing funding for mental health services, making mental health care more affordable, and raising awareness of mental health problems, we can help to ensure that everyone has access to the care they need.
